Local nursing students receive Boyd Scholarship

On April 24, four nursing students received the Clifton E. Boyd Scholarship from the Pitt Golden K Kiwanis. Every year, this award is given to deserving nursing students working through their curriculum within Pitt County at either East Carolina or Pitt Community College.

These young ladies received this award based on their academic merit, financial need or other factors recommended by the scholarship committee. This year the scholarship was awarded to four students from ECU. Each student is awarded a $500 scholarship to use towards tuition, fees, books and equipment.

This year the recipients are all ECU students: Mercedes Yoder, Laura McLain, Mackenzie Jackson and Kayla Neal.Also pictured are: Mike Aichinger (Pitt Golden K Kiwanis), Dr. Annette Preery and Mark Hand (ECU), Charlene Silver and Melissa Spain (CF of NC East).

The Pitt Golden K Kiwanis created this scholarship in 2002 in honor of their member Clifton E. Boyd who died in 2006. Boyd was a vital member of the community, even serving as President of the Kiwanis club. Boyd also played an important roll in creating several scholarships for both ECU and PCC. In 2000, he received the North Carolina Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service.
